Patrick Marinelli - 2015 Audience
November, 2015
I do not think the anachronisms were well done, or at least were not well fit into the rest of the play. When I talked to Janine after the show she said that they were meant to explain that the stories were not just about the historical women, but about women across time, and the anachronisms were meant to bring the audience out of the play and make them relate the historical messages to the present time. Being completely honest, to me they just sounded like bad scripting. Because of nearly all the women being named biblical characters and the historical themed costuming and set (both of which were fantastic), I would never have thought that the time of the play was meant to be ambiguous. I think the message of the play can carry on and be related to modern day by an intelligent audience without needing to mention band-aides or a restraining order. (The band-aids one was especially jarring, as I expected her to say bandages). If the point of the anachronisms was in fact to startle the audience, then it was successful, although I think the morals of each individual story and the linked story-telling between cast members was enough to convey the message.
I know that was a lot of critiquing, but I did enjoy the show, and I'm happy for everyone involved that it had such a large interest!
