Lewis and Clark met the Flatheads in 1805 and described them and their allies the New Perce as being friendly and exceptional Indians. They call themselves the “Selish,” Flathead being a misnomer applied by the whites. They frequently crossed the mountains to the plains to hunt buffalo and there clashed with the Blackfeet, their hereditary enemies.
